Here are some simple "Dos" and "Please Don'ts to help you get the most out of your class:
Most important...Please honor your body and your yoga experience.
Please bring bottled water (preferably room temperature ), a towel, and wear comfortable clothing.
DO arrive early. Getting to class about 10 minutes early can help you settle in and focus your mind and attitude with the purpose of the class. While you're waiting you can do a few stretches, practice some poses, or just sit or lie quietly, breathe, and get centered.
Please DON'T eat for two hours before class. If you practice yoga on a full stomach, you might experience cramps or nausea, especially in twists, deep forward bends, and inversions. Digesting food also takes energy that can make you lethargic.
DO let your teacher know about injuries or conditions that might affect your practice. This will allow the teacher to suggest modifications to certain poses.
DO create an intention. To help you focus, you might find it helpful to dedicate your practice to a certain intention. This might be to yourself. To become healthier, or more loving, or more compassionate and patient. Or it might be for the benefit of a friend, or something in the world that touches your heart. No intention is too big or too small.
Please DON'T bring pagers or cell phones to class, or put them on Vibrate/silence. We want to maintain the peace and harmony of our practice.
DO bring a towel or your own mat if you have one, and arrive clean and free of scents.
Please DON'T compare yourself to others. Honor YOUR body and your experience. You will find the more you focus on your breathing and go inside, you will experience progress. Take a positive, loving attitude to your class time. Yoga is a personal journey.
DO take time afterwards to think about what you practiced in class, so you can retain what you learned. Review your poses. Make a special "note to self" if any feelings, emotions, or energies arise from your experience. Even if you remember just one thing from each class, you'll start retaining more and it will help to deepen your
practice.
